Stranger Things star Maya Hawke’s new movie Wildcat has released a first trailer.

The film documents the life of celebrated Southern Gothic writer Flannery O’Connor, with the biopic containing scenes from six of her short stories.

While Maya plays the titular role, Wildcat is a family affair, with her father Ethan Hawke directing the film as well as co-writing it with Shelby Gaines.

In the film, Flannery "ponders the great questions of her writing: Can scandalous art still serve God? Does suffering precede all greatness? Can illness be a blessing?"

The synopsis reads: "In 1950, Flannery visits her mother Regina (Ozark’s Laura Linney) in Georgia when she is diagnosed with lupus at 24 years old. Struggling with the same disease that took her father’s when she was a child and desperate to make her mark as a great writer, this crisis pitches her imagination into a feverish exploration of belief.

"As she dives deeper into her craft, the lines between reality, imagination, and faith begin to blur, allowing Flannery to ultimately come to peace with her situation and heal a strained relationship with her mother."

The intense new trailer shows Flannery struggling with her illness while trying to write her first novel, with those around her disturbed by the darkness of her writing.

"Dear God, please," she says. "I can never seem to escape myself unless I’m writing, yet strangely I’m never more myself than when I’m writing."

Wildcat premiered at Telluride Film Festival in September and is set to be released in US cinemas on May 3.

While the film contains scenes of a sexual nature, last year Maya and Ethan revealed that there wasn’t any awkwardness on set when she was filming these scenes with fellow actors Rafael Casal and Cooper Hoffman.

"We needed to take care of Rafael and Cooper," Ethan said. "I think it was weird for them. We were so comfortable with it. I couldn’t care less."

Maya added: "We made sure to have an intimacy coordinator on set for them. So that they felt safe and comfortable and not like they were being spied on…"

"…by some creepy dad," Ethan joked.

Wildcat will be released in US cinemas on May 3.
