The trailer for Imaginary, the new film from M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy's studio Blumhouse, has just dropped.

The trailer for the film starts off nice enough, as Jessica (DeWanda Wise) moves back into her childhood home with her stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun) and discovers her old stuffed bear named Chauncey in the basement. The bear soon becomes Alice's imaginary friend.

We get lots of lovely scenes of the girl having fun with the bear, but of course, this is a horror film, so things start to get dark pretty quickly.

It transpires that imaginary friends are essentially spirits that like to connect with young people, but when those people grow up and lose interest, the spirits get angry and, in some cases, vengeful.

Not only do we hear a demonic voice and see the bear moving when our protagonist tries to get her stepdaughter to leave it alone, but there's also a shady black figure hanging around too... the spirit who Wise's character once knew as a child herself.

The cast includes The Walking Dead actor Tom Payne, though we don't see him in the trailer and his role is currently unknown.

Director Jeff Wadlow said of the film: "DeWanda has been more than a star on this movie – she has been a full creative partner.

"So much of horror grows out of our most basic fears of childhood, and DeWanda taps into all of that. You know that old saying that the audience's imagination is scarier than any movie? We're going to put that to the test."

Imaginary will be released in cinemas on March 8, 2024.
