The Flash is still nearly two months away from its cinema release, but we now have the first reactions to the new DC film.

The movie's release has been shrouded in controversy because lead actor Ezra Miller has faced multiple legal issues, including pleading no contest to disorderly conduct and facing assault charges stemming from separate incidents.

Miller released a statement in August 2022 saying they had "gone through a time of intense crisis", adding that they "want to apologise to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life."

Following its world premiere last night (April 25) at CinemaCon, the critics in attendance have taken to social media to reveal their first thoughts on The Flash.

"DC’s #TheFlash is TREMENDOUS! Forget DC, it is without a doubt among the best superhero films ever made," tweeted Erik Davis. "An all-timer. Inventive storytelling, FANTASTIC action sequences, great cast. SO MANY nerdy details. I’m in tears at the end. Everything you want from a superhero film & more."

Scott Menzel also called it "one of the best superhero films of all time", adding: "No joke, The Flash is the ultimate movie going experience as it has a little bit of everything! Action, emotion, heart, humor and plenty of nostalgia."

However, Jeff Sneider said that while the movie is "fantastic", "The last hr is MOSTLY terrible", writing: "Just an utter mess that’ll leave you asking, 'what the HELL is going on?' Fan service & DC villain problem strike again. Mixed bag overall."

Some more reactions are below:

The Flash sees Barry Allen (Miller) use his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past, only to see his attempt to save his family inadvertently change the future for the darker.

Barry becomes trapped in a superhero-less world where General Zod (Michael Shannon) has returned, leading him to try and coax Batman (Michael Keaton) out of retirement to save the world he's in – and his own future.

Given that it deals in the multiverse, DC fans have been speculating whether we could see cameos from The Flash TV show, especially as Miller has made a cameo in that.

However, Grant Gustin has shut down any rumours about his potential appearance in the movie. "You know, people ask me on the street all the time and, yeah, I'm not keeping some big elaborate secret," he explained.

The Flash is released in cinemas on June 16.
