Frank Finlay Dies Aged 89

British screen veteran Frank Finlay died yesterday at the age of 89, his family have confirmed.

Born in Lancashire in 1926, Finlay worked steadily in film and television from the 1950s onwards, enjoying a long, varied and high respected career.

Amongst his famous performances, he played Iago alongside Laurence Olivier in 1965′s ‘Othello,’ which earned him an Oscar nomination. He also won BAFTAs for his work on TV plays ‘ The Adventures of Don Quixote’ and ‘Candide.’

Other TV work included Jean Valjean in the 1967 mini-series of ‘Les Miserables,’ the title role in Dennis Potter’s 1971 series ‘Casanova,’ and Van Helsing in 1977 TV movie ‘Count Dracula.’

However, for film audiences Finlay is perhaps best remembered as Porthos in ‘The Three Musketeers,’ ‘The Four Musketeers’ and ‘The Return of the Musketeers,’ alongside Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain and Michael York.

He also took supporting roles in cult favourites ‘Shaft in Africa’ and ‘Lifeforce.’
