Frank Oz hints Yoda may return in Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Seen the last of him we might not have. Possibly.
Frank Oz – film director, Muppets legend, and the voice of ‘Star Wars’ icon Yoda – has been asked about rumours that the character may yet return in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ or other future films in the franchise… and while he doesn’t confirm it, he doesn’t deny it either.
Quizzed on the matter by Variety, 72-year old Oz replies, “I feel like I’m a prisoner at war here, and I can only give you my name, rank and serial number. To be true to the people who asked me, and they are kind of my family, I have to say I’ve been asked not to talk about it.
“I love Yoda. I would be happy to talk to you about it at the time they let me.”
Now, for all we know the top brass at Lucasfilm may have asked Jar-Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best to say much the same thing if asked about his character coming back – but that’s not to say it’s definitely going to happen.
Even so, given how the Jedi have been shown to have that knack for returning as shiny ghosts, a reappearance from Yoda in the near future certainly doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility.
Oz has voiced Yoda in every ‘Star Wars’ movie aside from the 1977 original – and yes, that does include ‘The Force Awakens,’ in which he did some uncredited voice work, much like Ewan McGregor did as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Oz has also lent his vocal talents to a number of ‘Star Wars’ shorts and TV specials, and most recently some episodes of TV cartoon series ‘Star Wars Rebels.’
With or without Yoda, ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ will open in UK cinemas on 15 December.
