Freaky Friday 2 production starts soon – more than 20 years after original
Stars Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are finally reunited on set 21 years after the first Freaky Friday movie premiered.
The sequel to the hit comedy is now confirmed to be in production, as Disney shares some behind-the-scenes shots of Freaky Friday 2 on social media.
Lohan and Curtis will reprise their roles of Anna and Tess Coleman, respectively, but details of the plot have not yet been made public.
Other returning cast members include: Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao.
There are also some additions to the cast as well, including Julia Butters, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Sophia Hammons.
Nisha Ganatra will direct the sequel, after recent work on Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales and feature films The High Note and Late Night.
The original film’s producer, Andrew Gunn, will return alongside Curtis and Lohan, working closely with former Disney exec Kristin Burr.
The original film grossed $160m (£127m) in cinemas worldwide, meaning anticipation is high for this long-awaited sequel.
Indeed, millions have already flocked to like Disney’s TikTok showing the two main stars on set.
Freaky Friday 2 release date
Despite few details about the content of the film, Freaky Friday 2 is expected to release in cinemas in 2025.
An exact window is not yet known but this does mean rumours that it would be a Disney+ special appear to be untrue.
The first whispers about a sequel started in 2023, with Lohan and Curtis teasing the possibilities on social media. However, the movie wasn’t officially confirmed until March of this year.
For example, Curtis first sparked interest among fans when she told The View in October 2022 that she had personally “written to Disney” about her own desire to make a follow-up to Freaky Friday.
