'Frozen II' gets a dark and moody first teaser trailer

Disney dropped the first teaser trailer for Frozen II, completely out of the blue, and there’s a lot to process.

The first film in 2013 was a box-office success and worldwide musical phenomenon, with the tale of young princesses rapidly acquiring a huge fanbase.

This is the first we’ve seen of the long-awaited sequel to Disney Animation’s biggest recent hit, and it’s not giving much away plot-wise. The trailer opens with Elsa and it looks like she’s headed out to sea.

She’s using her ice powers to step across the water. However, the breaking waves are halting her progress. Where is she trying to go? Perhaps to find her parents who were lost at sea in the 2013 film?

Elsewhere in the trailer we see Elsa’s sister Anna on the balcony of a palace, surrounded by floating glowing diamonds. Kristoff is shown riding Sven through a forest in a herd of reindeers, then we get another scene with Anna alone in a huge dark cave.

Another shot shows Elsa using her magic to battle a mysterious force , with Olaf by her side. Then we get a glimpse of a brand new character – a young girl – in an autumnal forest clearing.

There’s another moody shot of the core cast stood atop a mountain, before the trailer ends with a shot that could be straight out of a horror film, which sees Anna brandishing a sword against a mysterious enemy.

The first footage is certainly a lot darker than we were expecting, particularly after the saccharine sweet tone of the two Frozen shorts – Frozen Fever and Olaf’s Frozen Adventure that were set between the events of the two movies.

Very little is known about the plot of the film that reunites the voice talents of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff. Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown have reportedly also recorded roles for the sequel, that will be directed once again by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee.

The first teaser poster has also been released (HT ScreenRant). Check it out below, bonus points if you can translate the runes.
