Gary Oldman unveils stunning transformation into Winston Churchill
We shall fight them on the beaches… and we shall fight them in the make-up department.
Indeed, this is a stunning transformation for Gary Oldman into wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
Complete with receding hair, cigar and prosthetic double chin, the ‘Batman’ star is genuinely unrecognisable for his upcoming role in ‘Darkest Hour’.
The movie, penned by Anthony McCarten and helmed by ‘Atonement’s Joe Wright centres on Churchill’s charge against the Hitler’s advancing armies at the beginning of World War II.
It will detail the fall of France in 1940, and the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, leaving Britain isolated against the Nazis, in danger of invasion and suffering bombardment from the Luftwaffe.
Churchill took power in 1940, and rather than bow to pressure to appease Germany, he conducted the rescue of 335,000 troops at Dunkirk just three weeks into his tenure.
It was at this point that he made his pivotal speech, telling parliament: “We shall fight on beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender.”
Oldman leads a star-studded cast for the movie.
Kristin Scott Thomas plays Churchill’s wife Clementine, John Hurt is outgoing Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, ‘Rogue One’s Ben Mendelsohn is George VI.
Lily James also stars playing Elizabeth Nell, Churchill’s personal secretary.
And as one rather droll Reddit user noted ‘You think that’s impressive? Daniel Day Lewis is playing the cigar’.
The movie lands in the UK on December 29, 2017.
