The 70-year old actress will play the mother of the contemporary comedy star in an as-yet untitled 20th Century Fox movie to be directed by Jonathan Levine (’50/50,’ ‘The Night Before’).

The film, described on IMDb only as ‘Untitled Mother-Daughter/Action Comedy Project,’ is also co-written by Schumer, her ‘Inside Amy Schumer’ collaborator Kim Caramele, and Kate Dippold (’The Heat, ‘Ghostbusters’).

It will be Hawn’s first acting role since 2002′s ‘The Banger Sisters,’ in which she co-starred with Susan Sarandon.

Speaking to People, the actress was full of praise for her future co-star - and dropped a slight hint as to what the film will be about.

“She’a amazing… I just can’t think of a better movie than doing this with Amy.

“We’re going to hit the balls back and forth. Two women lost in the jungle. It’s going to be so much fun! I love her very much.“

Since her last screen performance, Hawn has concentrated her efforts on The Hawn Foundation, a non-profit organisation which specialises in helping educate troubled children, which she declares “the greatest thing I’ve ever done, ever.

"It got to a point where I thought, gee, you know, it would be kind of fun to make people laugh again!"

"I’ll tell you, running a foundation is like running a business, it’s very tough. That’s going really well now. So I thought it would be really fun to do [this movie with] Amy Schumer, to play her mom.

"We’re getting ready to play a really, really funny movie together. I’m extremely excited about it. It’s going to be a blast!”

Hawn became a big name in Hollywood after being awarded Best Supporting Actress at both the Golden Globes and the Oscars for ‘Cactus Flower’ in 1969, aged 24.

She went on to many successful roles in the decades ahead, including Steven Spielberg’s early film ‘Sugarland Express’ (1974), ‘Private Benjamin’ (1980), ‘Overboard’ (1987), ‘Death Becomes Her’ (1992), and ‘The First Wives Club’ (1996).

The untitled action comedy is scheduled to hit screens in May 2017.
