Gotham Awards Breaking Out TV Honors for June Ceremony

The Gotham Film & Media Institute has announced that it is spinning off its TV awards into a separate ceremony called the Gotham TV Awards, with the inaugural edition set to take place on Tuesday, June 4, in New York.

For the past decade, the Gotham Awards, presented by The Gotham Film & Media Institute, has presented TV awards in a handful of categories, but more will be added to the June ceremony.

And going forward TV honors will be presented in June, not in the main Gotham Awards ceremony, which typically takes place after Thanksgiving.

The inaugural Gotham TV Awards will present awards for breakthrough comedy, drama, limited and nonfiction series; outstanding performances in comedy, drama and limited series; and an audience award.

Additional categories are expected to be announced for the 2025 edition of the Gotham TV Awards.

Gotham TV Awards submissions open April 15 and close April 29 with nominations set to be announced on May 16 and winners revealed during the June 4 ceremony, where TV industry icons will also be celebrated.

The Gotham TV Awards nominations will be selected by committees of critics, journalists, programmers and curators and separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in making TV and film will determine the final award recipients.

“We are proud of our legacy in recognizing the creative community in film and TV, and we have come to recognize that our TV awards could have even greater impact,” Gotham executive director Jeffrey Sharp said in a statement. “We sense a unique opportunity to widen our reach by expanding our competitive categories and tributes in a show focused solely on creators of episodic TV, limited series, and non-theatrical streaming movies.”

Gotham deputy director Kia Brooks added, “This expansive view of the creative landscape harkens back to our founding mission in 1979 to celebrate and nurture independent film and media creators. We believe this awards show could be a launching pad to expand our support of TV creators and continue our longstanding tradition of discovering unique voices and elevating original stories.”

At the 2023 Gotham Awards, which incidentally took place prior to the strike-delayed 2023 Emmys, Beef, which had the most nominations in the TV categories with three nods, swept the TV awards with two prizes (two nominations were in the same category). The limited series won breakthrough series under 40 minutes, and star Ali Wong won outstanding performance in a new series, beating out her onscreen counterpart Steven Yeun.
