Acclaimed animation director Hayao Miyazaki has confirmed that his first film in a decade – How Do You Live – is set to be released in the summer of 2023.

The release was announced by Studio Ghibli, the studio Miyazaki co-founded in 1985.

The studio did not release any other details relating to the film but did post a picture of a bird on its social media channels.

Little is known about the film but in an interview with The New York Times last year, Miyazaki said the plot was based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino.

The book follows a teenage boy who is forced to live with his uncle after his father dies.

Miyazaki has announced his retirement from filmmaking several times, most recently in 2013 after the release of The Wind Rises, his acclaimed biopic of engineer Jiro Horikoshi.

Miyazaki announced he was returning from retirement in 2017 to direct a new film.

Studio Ghibli recently collaborated with Lucasfilm to create a Star Wars short centred around the character Grogu from The Mandalorian.

Entitled Zen - Grogu and Dust Bunnies, the film premiered on Disney+ in November and signified a rare crossover between characters belonging to Disney and Studio Ghibli.

Miyazaki's work has also been adapted for the stage with My Neighbour Totoro recently premiering in the West End through the Royal Shakespeare Company.

In the recent Sight and Sound poll of the 100 greatest films of all time, two of Miyazaki's films made the list. Spirited Away was voted the 75th best film ever while My Neighbour Totoro finished joint 72nd along with Journey to Italy and L'avventura.
