Hot air balloon catches fire during famous festival

Two people have been reported injured on Monday after their hot air balloon hit a power line, causing the gondola to burst into flames. ABC News has video footage from those visiting the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta who witnessed the terrifying ordeal.

It was not immediately made clear what caused the balloon to brush the power lines — which resulted in a hard landing that ejected both the passenger and the pilot of the hot air balloon before the flames got to them — but the balloon fire was able to be put out and the injured parties were taken to a nearby hospital and have already been discharged.

The accident is responsible for causing an hour-long power outage in a nearby suburb.

Two more accidents have been reported since the start of the festival: Authorities also had to rush to help the passengers in a balloon went flying into a cable line and another balloon crashed into a tree on a golf course.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta welcomes over 500 balloons per year and attracts over 866,000 spectators. The festival runs from Oct. 5 to Oct. 13.
