Armie Hammer has downplayed the chances of a Call Me By Your Name sequel happening in the near future.
Hammer, who play Oliver, the love interest to Timothee Chalamet’s Elio, in Luca Guadagnino’s Oscar winning coming of age 2017 romance, told Collider that the film “needs room to breathe.”
Especially because “so many people are emotionally invested” in Call Me By Your Name. So much so “that if you release the second one now, no matter what, you’re just setting yourself up for failure.”
In Andre Aciman’s 2007 novel of the same name, the story depicts the summer romance between Elio and Olivier in summer of 1987, before then picking up their relationship 20-years later, too. The latter part of the novel wasn’t explored in Guadagnino’s adaptation.
That is exactly why Hammer believes that Guadagnino, Chalmet, and himself shouldn’t return for the hugely anticipated follow-up until the time is right.
“If you give us time, like the story is supposed to happen, if you give us that time, then we can come back when I'm in my 40s, and Timmy's... 23 [laughs] then we can do it again then."

Everyone involved in Call Me By Your Name has been very open and enthusiastic about returning for a follow-up. In fact, as recently as March, 2020, Guadagnino said he was due to meet with an unnamed American writer to discuss the project. But the Coronavirus pandemic forced them to reschedule.
Aciman also gave the potential Call Me By Your Name sequel even more material when he released the follow-up Find Me in 2019.
