The latest news from the DC Universe will definitely put a smile on your face.

Jared Leto seems to be up to his old tricks (don't send us live rats, please!) with a series of cryptic Snapchat pictures hinting at his future as The Joker.

Side-by-side shots showed a tooth encased in one of The Joker's Gucci boxes, and the cover of Alan Moore's legendary (and contentious) graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke.

Batman: The Killing Joke remains hugely controversial for DC fans, not only for offering an actual origin for The Joker but also for its extreme (and some say misogynistic) beating of Batgirl at the hands of The Joker.

There has been no news yet about Jared Leto reprising his Suicide Squad role as The Joker in future DC movies, although he hinted as much last summer.

"I think this film is probably an introduction to this new iteration, this new version of The Joker, but it really depends on the audiences - how they respond to The Joker," he explained to Digital Spy.

"This film is about the Suicide Squad and their attempts to successfully complete their mission, and the Joker story is really a parallel one that's separate from their overarching mission."

What's not yet clear is where exactly The Joker would fit in DC's upcoming release slate, since there's been no news about him shooting a cameo on this year's Justice League movie.

There's always a showdown with Deathstroke and the Dark Knight in Ben Affleck's hugely-anticipated Batman solo movie, after the brief tease we got of a Joker/Bats showdown in Suicide Squad.

The Clown Prince of Crime might also pop up in Gotham City Sirens, a female-centric superhero adventure uniting Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Catwoman and Poison Ivy.
