Watch: Jason Momoa is ‘secure in his masculinity’
Jason Momoa's muscle-bound warrior Khal Drogo may have been one of the most iconic figures in the HBO series of Game of Thrones, but behind the scenes he was 'in debt and starving'.
The Hawaiian actor has revealed that his family was in trouble after his brief tenure on the show finished.
Drogo is wounded in the latter part of season one and succumbs to the infection, his bride Daenerys – played by Emilia Clarke – eventually smothering him.
As a result, Momoa didn't ride the wave of success that the series soon latched onto.
He told InStyle: “I mean, we were starving after Game of Thrones.
“I couldn’t get work. It’s very challenging when you have babies and you’re completely in debt.”
Momoa had two young children with his partner, actress Lisa Bonet, at the time Game of Thrones was being made. He’s also the step-father to Bonet’s daughter, actress Zoe Kravtiz.
And though he'd appeared in a regular role in Stargate: Atlantis, his career was yet to take off, and his reboot of Conan The Barbarian in 2011, released the same year as Game of Thrones, tanked at the box office.
Luckily, he was cast as Aquaman for the DCEU in 2014, and made his first cameo appearance in the role in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The Aquaman solo movie then landed in 2018, and remarkably topped a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.
He's recently wrapped his role in Denis Villeneuve's Dune, playing Duncan Idaho.
It's due out on 1 October, 2021.
