Javier Bardem is in talks to play King Triton in Disney's live-action 'Little Mermaid'

Javier Bardem could be lining up to play King Triton in Disney's live-action remake of animation classic The Little Mermaid.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning Skyfall and Pirates of the Caribbean actor is in talks with the Mouse House for the role, voiced by actor Kenneth Mars in the 1989 original.

Bardem is the latest star to be linked to the movie, which appears to be ratcheting up its casting process.

One Direction singer turned actor Harry Styles is said to be among those in consideration for the role of Prince Eric.

And it comes after R&B singer Halle Bailey snared the lead of Princess Ariel, with Melissa McCarthy said to be line up to play her evil aunt Ursula.

Meanwhile, also in talks for roles are Awkwafina as Scuttle and Room star Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.

Rob Marshall, who helmed Into The Woods and Mary Poppins Returns, will be behind the camera, with new – and old – music from Disney legend Alan Menken and lyrics from Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

There's no release date set as yet, but it's due to go into production in early 2020.
