Joe Thomas talks awkward sex scenes in 'The Festival' (Exclusive)

As The Inbetweeners turns 10, the iconic show’s creator, Iain Morris, and star Joe ‘Simon Cooper’ Thomas return this summer for British comedy The Festival.

Filmed at real-life festivals, including Leeds Festival 2017, the film promises to show the ‘real’ side of summer music weekenders.

So you can expect plenty of rain, mud, blocked portaloos and awkward sexual encounters in this raucous British gem of a film.

Joe stars as Nick, a recently dumped graduate, who is persuaded by his best mate (Hammed Animashaun) to get over his heartbreak by joining him for an epic 3-day music festival.

Of course, not all goes to plan and Nick not only experiences the less than glamorous sides of festivals – including waking up with an unwanted nipple piercing – but bumps into his ex-girlfriend.

We sat down with Thomas and Morris to talk The Festival’s most outrageous moments.

“There is a whole chase sequence that is just me in my pants that is quite pummelling to film because it was just day after day.

And I think that was quite gruelling. I was trying to get away from people because I was embarrassed and I couldn’t because it was so muddy. And so I was just kind of waddling around in the mud,” Thomas said.

Morris said we can expect plenty of awkwardly hilarious sex scenes. “There are a couple of sex scenes that I think are pretty outrageous! Hopefully they are very very funny.”

“They are really awkward to film. No one really wants to be doing them,” he said.

“They are very clunky. There is a lot of ‘ooo…arrgh…sorry’…There are always loads of people around. Just like normal sex basically!” Thomas added.

2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the iconic coming of age British sitcom The Inbetweeners. Spanning just three seasons (2008-2010), the show’s co-creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley followed up with two box office hits. 2011’s The Inbetweeners movie took in £45 million, making it the most successful British comedy of all time and its 2014 sequel The Inbetweeners 2 was the highest grossing British film that year.

The Festival is in cinemas from 14th August.
