Joey King's new movie Uglies confirms Netflix release date

Netflix has confirmed the release of Joey King's dystopian sci-fi movie The Uglies.

The film is an adaptation of the 2005 novel Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, with the author taking to Twitter/X to share the good news. After being in development hell, the movie was filmed in 2021 and is now set to land on our screens on September 13.

It'll be less than two months now before fans of the book series will get to see King as protagonist Tally Youngblood.

Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the movie will retell the events of the first book, following 16-year-old Tally as she gets ready to receive her cosmetic surgery operation to go from being an "Ugly" to a "Pretty".

Tally begins to question this protocol when she befriends Shay, another Ugly who she shares a birthday with. Shay doesn't intend to ever become a Pretty and invites Tally to live free from constraints in a renegade settlement called the Smoke.

Meanwhile, Tally is tasked by the government to help them locate the rebels.

The Uglies is directed by McG from a script co-written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson. Alongside King, who also serves as an executive producer, the movie also stars Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, Chase Stokes, and Laverne Cox.

The Uglies will become available to stream on Netflix from September 13.
