Yahoo Movies John Boyega uncovers a clone conspiracy in new trailer for Netflix's They Cloned Tyrone
Star Wars actor John Boyega is confronted with himself in the new trailer for Netflix's They Cloned Tyrone.
The film stars Boyega alongside The Marvels actress Teyonah Parris, Jamie Foxx (who also serves as producer) and 24's Kiefer Sutherland.
They Cloned Tyrone is directed by Creed II writer Juel Taylor, who makes his feature directorial debut. Taylor also co-wrote the script with Tony Rettenmaier.
The film's synopsis reads: "An eerie series of events leads an unlikely trio (John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx) down a rabbit hole into a sinister neighbourhood conspiracy."
While the trailer doesn't give away who's doing the cloning or why, it's all happening in a "freaky laboratory" accessible through an elevator that appears to be hidden in a connivence store.
The film is an ode to Blaxploitation movies of the 1970s — and Taylor explained to Entertainment Weekly that while he wanted it to be funny, "it's a mystery movie before everything else".
Speaking about his intentions with the film, Taylor added: "There's a lot of stuff that you could read into with the film, but we really didn't set out to make something that was didactic or preachy.
"I think we put a lot of care into it. There are themes in the movie, there are games that we're playing in the movie that you can latch onto. But I think different people are going to take different things from it. And that's cool."
Meanwhile, earlier this year Boyega landed a role in the sci-fi movie The Freshening.
The film will be helmed by Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan, who's adapting a short story by Rachel Khong published in The Paris Review.
The story takes place in an alternate America dominated by a public health initiative known as 'The Freshening', where humans are capable of seeing only their own race and gender.
To temporarily reverse this, Boyega's character Reese uses a drug and meets a woman named Sam afterwards.
They Cloned Tyrone premieres on Netflix on July 21.
