Kelly Rowland lands lead role in Tyler Perry's Netflix movie

Kelly Rowland is to join forces with Tyler Perry to co-produce and star in an upcoming project for Netflix.

Rowland will star in Perry’s Mea Culpa, a legal drama which will be the fifth film project by Perry for Netflix.

Mea Culpa follows a criminal defence attorney who hopes to become a partner and takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend.

The film will also star Moonlight's Trevante Rhodes, RonReaco Lee (Nappily Ever After), Sean Sagar (Our Girl) and his brother Nick Sagar (The Princess Switch).

Perry is to share the producing credit with Rowland, Angi Bones and Will Areu.

Not much else is known about the project, but it is set to begin filming this spring with Perry billed as the writer and director alongside producing.

Before Mea Culpa there is Perry's upcoming World War II drama Six Triple Eight, which marks the filmmaker's fourth film for the streaming service

Six Triple Eight stars Susan Sarandon, Kerry Washington and Dean Norris and will tell the true story of the 6888th battalion – the only all-Black, all-female battalion during World War II. It will focus on the 855 women who were assigned with the seemingly impossible task of sifting through and fixing three years' worth of undelivered mail.

As for Rowland, Mea Culpa isn't her first attempt at producing. She acts as an executive producer on the Merry Liddle Christmas series on Lifetime.

The Destiny's Child singer also has numerous acting credits to her name, including Empire, Think Like a Man, Freddy vs Jason and she recently appeared in the Netflix film The Curse of Bridge Hollow.
