This impressive 50-inch UN80 model offers an immersive big picture with 4K picture detail and the brand’s award-winning webOS smart TV platform.

If you’re stepping up from a regular HD telly, you’ll immediately be struck by just how sharp and vibrant its pictures are, particularly when watching top trending TV shows on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

The set is HDR enabled too, using adaptive Active HDR for more dynamic, realistic images — and for a truly authentic movie night, the set also has Filmmaker Mode, a Hollywood approved picture preset that presents films as the director intended, disabling motion smoothing, which can make even the most expensive movies look like a daytime soap.

For programmes which aren’t available in 4K UHD, then the UN80 uses artificial intelligence (AI) with HDR effect processing to upscale pictures for optimum sharpness and eye candy appeal.

The set cuts a fashionable pose; with regulation thin bezel and two widely-spaced feet (so make sure your furniture is wide enough to cope, if you’re not wall-mounting). To combat the thin audio that LED LCD screens are notorious for, it also boasts Ultra Surround, for wider, more immersive listening. Power output is rated at a gutsy 2x10W.

The set supports Bluetooth speaker hook-up too, which is a recommended upgrade that opens the door to beefier audio without trailing leads.

LG’s webOS smart platform allows quick access to streaming services, from a horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen. It’s navigated by the brand’s unique Magic Remote, with on-screen cursor. There’s a good choice of streaming apps onboard, including Disney+, AppleTV+ and YouTube, but for reasons best known to LG, mainstream catch-up TV services beyond BBC iPlayer are AWOL, so you’ll need something like a Chromecast with Google TV dongle to get them.

You can voice search for shows using either Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. A ThinQ AI home dashboard groups all your connected compatible gadgets together, so you can quickly jump between inputs, select a wireless device to stream, or manage your connected IoT smart gizmos.
