Luc Besson production company EuropaCorp struggling after Valerian flop

Despite making a highly anticipated return to sci-fi, Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was not the worldwide smash investors were hoping for.

The Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Ethan Hawke, and Rihanna-starring adaptation of Valerian and Laureline has the title of most expensive independent movie ever made, costing $177 million, not including marketing and additional costs.

Unfortunately, after only making $225 million worldwide, Besson’s production company EuropaCorp are reportedly struggling to make ends meet.

According to AFP, the company has been left considering a debt restructuring “given the cost of debt and maturity of its credit lines”.

Last year was also unsuccessful for EuropCorp, which ended with them recording a total loss of €120 million. Other films released since then include Their Finest, Renegades, and The Circle.

EuropaCorp — which previously produced all three Taken films — also say they are still aiming to produce three English-language films each year along with two French-language films, with The Transporter 5 and 6 already announced.
