Marvel Cinematic Universe Will Reference ABC and Netflix TV Shows Eventually

‘Agents of SHIELD’, 'Agent Carter’ and 'Daredevil’ have been littered with references - big and small, obvious and subtle - to the movies that made them possible.

They all occupy the same Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but the movies have yet to reference what’s going on on the smaller screen. That looks set to change however.

Addressing the question, Marvel president Kevin Feige said: “I think that’s inevitable at some point as we’re plotting the movies going forward and they’re doing the shows.” (via IGN)

Speaking at an event marking the home release of 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’, Feige said a big reason for the lack of connections is how the production of the movies and TV series don’t always match up.

“It’s easier for them. They’re more nimble and faster and produce things quicker than we do, which is one of the main reasons you see the repercussions of 'Winter Soldier’ and 'Age of Ultron’,” he said.

“Going forward and certainly as they begin to do more shows and cast them with such great actors as they have - particularly 'Daredevil’ - that that may occur. A lot of it is by the time we start doing a movie, they’d be midway through a season; by the time it comes out they’d be done with the second, starting the third season. Finding timing on that is not always easy.”

ABC’s more family-friendly 'Agents of SHIELD’ (below) is very heavy-handed with its references to present and future movies, while the Netflix shows, which will continue with 'Jessica Jones’ in November and 'Daredevil’ season two next year, stand more on their own. For now at least.

As the MCU grows, so too will the TV series. ABC is said to be working on a couple of spin-offs from 'AoS’ and has second series of 'Agent Carter’ set for this winter. Netflix meanwhile is making series based on Luke Cage and Iron Fist before bringing them together with Daredevil and Jessica Jones to form The Defenders.

Even if its a simple reference to “the devil of Hells Kitchen” in next year’s 'Captain America: Civil War’ that would be nice to hear, and a good start.
