Marvel boss Kevin Feige has said streaming services are the future for the comic book giant.

The man who has orchestrated all 23 instalments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe admitted as much during an interview with Emmy magazine to promote the upcoming Disney+ release of WandaVision.

Over the last few months, and in the wake of the global pandemic’s impact on the film industry, both Warner Bros and Disney have made it clear that they are pivoting their attention to streaming services.

Clearly, Feige doesn’t have a problem with this decision.

"Streaming is 100% the future and where consumers want to watch things. And hopefully they'll want to watch our long-form narrative series,” he said.

“An experience like WandaVision is something you can't get in a movie. You go to movies for things you can't get on streaming, and you go to streaming for things you can't get in a theatre. And of course, everything in a theatre goes to streaming eventually."

Feige said he was originally approached by former Disney CEO Bob Iger about bringing the MCU to Disney+ last January.

This proved to be perfect timing, as Feige and his Marvel team were just about to wrap up their work on the Infinity Saga storyline.

Marvel wanted to take the MCU into an “equally challenging and unexpected” direction, and so instantly recognised that bringing it to television would be “an adrenaline boost” to the entire franchise, Feige said.

It also meant that Feige and Marvel would be able to give bigger stories to Wanda and Vision, who “never had a chance to dominate the narrative because there was so much else going on”.

WandaVision is released on Disney+ on 15 January.
