Meet the 400-hp Five-Cylinder Audi TT RS

From Road & Track

The Audi TT is all well and good, but many just think of it as a more attractive, techier, sportier VW Golf.

The TT RS is most definitely not a VW Golf.

Audi's recipe for the TT RS is basically the same as in year's past. Instead of the four-cylinder you find in the TT and TT S, the RS has a turbo 2.5 liter five-cylinder, an engine configuration that you rarely see anymore.

In the new TT RS, that engine puts out 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, a full 40 horsepower more than the last TT RS. That means that it's faster. The coupe hits 60 in just 3.7 seconds with the heavier roadster taking 3.9 seconds.

The only transmission that Audi mentions is a dual-clutch, unlike the last RS. Audi hasn't explicitly said there is no manual, but we've emailed for clarification and will update when we hear more (Update: Audi has confirmed that the TT RS is double-clutch only which "yields faster 0-60 performance and better fuel economy.")

Audi has made the RS more chiseled and muscular than the regular car, but it's still unmistakably a TT.

It will go on sale this fall, we'll know more about it, like pricing, as the time gets closer.
