Mel Gibson Turned Down A Role In Marvel’s Thor

It looks as though ‘Thor’ could have once starred Mel Gibson.

During an interview with The Guardian, actor Mel Gibson revealed that he was once approached for a Marvel movie role… as Odin in the film, ‘Thor’.

Asked if he had ever been offered a superhero role, he replied: “Yeah, long time ago, to play Thor’s dad. But I didn’t do it.”

Of course, the part of Odin eventually went to Sir Anthony Hopkins, who reprised the role in the sequel, ‘Thor: The Dark World’. And while Hopkins was absolutely perfect for Odin, it’s difficult not to wonder what might have been…

Could Gibson be persuaded to star in a comic book movie?

That much is uncertain… but he seems to be a bit of a fan.

“Some are good. Some are kind of funny… Guardians of the Galaxy. Or the first Iron Man,” he said. “And some of them are just like retreats. I mean you can watch them do Spider-Man five times.”

Turning his attention to the film business in general, Gibson had a lot to say about the current state of cinema. Discussing the difficulty to get an original film made, it’s difficult to argue with what he has to say…

“There is a slight shift in film,” he said. “But, then again, I think all films are suffering from people not being able to now open them with their name. It’s a different kind of business these days… I think you used to get more variety of stories, films and performances. You had more of a chance of a profound film experience. But that’s not gone. I think that has been relegated to the independent world – but they have to do it twice as fast for half the money.”

But could we ever see Gibson appear in a comic book movie?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ heads to cinemas on 27 October 2017.
