Michael Douglas calls out Hollywood sexism

Michael Douglas has spoken out about the culture sexism that’s rife in the Hollywood system.

The 73-year-old star revealed that for his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, snaring roles becomes harder and harder, and it’s caused her to explore other avenues when it comes to work.

“She’s branching out in a couple other areas. She’s got a whole branding line of Casa Zeta-Jones and she’s on QVC and she’s an entrepreneur and I totally support her,” he said.

“The acting roles, particularly for ladies at a certain age, become much more difficult. This is something where you can actually control your life so she really enjoys it.”

Zeta-Jones, however, has credited both her background growing up in Wales and her getting older with changing how she views the business.

Speaking at an event for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation in May, she said: “I come from a from a working-class family in Wales and I worked hard to get to where I am.

“And for many years I think all of us are victims to the fact we’ve all got so humble… and we forget about the work and the hardships that we had to do to get where we were, and the sacrifices we make.

“You know what shaped me as an actor? Getting older. It’s true, for the mere fact that I’m not afraid.

“I genuinely lost my mojo [at one point] … Not careerwise, but here in my belly.

“Somewhere along the middle I got frightened again and I started to question myself as an actor and my choices. As I matured as a woman, as a human being, as a mother, as a wife, as a person on the planet — I’m not scared anymore. I’m not scared. And one thing I’m not is humble anymore.

“I’m sick of f***ing being humble. I really am. ‘So sorry I’m rich. So sorry I’m married to a movie star. So sorry I’m not so bad looking.’ No sorrys. Enough! All that is important to me now is my work.”

The 48-year-old Oscar winner was last seen in the 2016 big screen remake of Dad’s Army.

Douglas, meanwhile, is next up in Ant-Man and the Wasp, due out in the UK on August 3.
