Mission: Impossible 7 was the "most challenging" of the series

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One finally arrives in cinemas next week after a lengthy production.

The new movie was all set to start filming in February 2020 before being shut down as a result of the pandemic, while its resumption was also hit with other delays and controversies.

It's no wonder that Simon Pegg told Digital Spy that this one was the "most challenging" movie yet. "It's the biggest and we made it in the midst of what was happening at the time," he explained.

"Chris [McQuarrie] always likes us to be living a parallel life of high adventure. When we were defusing the bomb in Fallout, it was 1.15 in the morning, everyone was tired, it was the pressure to defuse this bomb. It was as much [to film] as the pressure in the scene."

Vanessa Kirby, who is back for her second Mission: Impossible movie as the White Widow, agreed with Pegg, but also saw the positives in the fact that they were even able to film this global blockbuster at all.

"It was challenging in the sense that we never knew when the film would go back up. If there was going to be anybody that would be able to do it, it was Tom and it was only the second movie in the world that did," she reflected.

"Even though it was so difficult as we had masks and it was socially distanced, and this film is so huge, it's got so many crew members and the locations are massive, and the travel, that was challenging.

"At the same time, the fact that we were shooting a film was so amazing and miraculous and felt so special. It was a combination of difficulty and intense gratitude, no matter how long it took and it did take three years."

A challenging production schedule for a Mission: Impossible movie is nothing new. After all, the previous movie had to deal with Tom Cruise breaking his ankle during one particular stunt.

But for newcomer Hayley Atwell, who plays the enigmatic Grace who may or may not be an ally of Ethan Hunt's, these challenges early on in filming set her up well for what was to come.

"I think that the way it began put me in good stead for all the inevitable obstacles and challenges that come your way, whether it's a pandemic suddenly interrupts that or whether it becomes a shifting location or a script change," she noted.

Based on the positive first reactions to the new movie, the challenges were worth it in the long run.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is released in UK cinemas on July 10 and in US cinemas on July 12.
