Moana To Break With Major Disney Tradition

Disney’s upcoming animated musical ‘Moana’ will see the studio taking a break from a long-standing tradition - its principal female character will NOT have a love story.

The film’s directors John Musker and Ron Clements have revealed that ‘Moana’ instead would focus on the film’s 16-year-old titular heroine “finding herself”.

The directing duo, who also made ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin’, announced the news while presenting three minutes of new footage from the film at San Diego Comic Con.

Set 2000 years ago in the Pacific, ‘Moana’ sees our young adventurer voiced by Auli’i Cravalho taking to the ocean to fulfil her ancestors’ unfinished quest with help from the demi-god Maui, voiced by Dwayne Johnson.

The film will feature new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of broadway smash ‘Hamilton’, and is coming to cinemas this December.

This is the second film in a row from the Walt Disney Animation Studios that has eschewed the notion that animated films need romantic subplots, with ‘Zootropolis’ also not featuring a love story at its centre.
