David Tennant has been cast in the upcoming movie adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club, based on the novel series by Richard Osman.

The Doctor Who star is among the latest names to join the already stacked cast of the Netflix adaptation.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie would play the four protagonists, a quartet of pensioners-turned-detectives.

Tennant has joined the ensemble in an undisclosed role, as Osman shared on his The Rest Is Entertainment podcast with Marina Hyde.

"We've got some more casting news," the former Pointless host said on June 17.

"We've already had the four main people, but [there are] a few more cast members."

Alongside Tennant – who Osman said he was "very, very excited about" – the author confirmed Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce will play Elizabeth's (Mirren) husband, while Naomi Ackie has been cast as police officer Donna de Freitas.

Danny Mays and Henry Lloyd-Hughes are also in the movie in undisclosed roles, with Osman promising some more exciting announcements are on the way.

"There's some great names and some more names coming as well," he said.

"I think this is the greatest British cast assembled since the [Harry Potter] movies," he continued, giving a shoutout to the first film director Chris Columbus who's stepping behind the camera for The Thursday Murder Club.

When Netflix picked up the film in April this year, Osman reflected on his very own 'pinch me' moment.

"I'm so proud of this book, so it is a dream to see The Thursday Murder Club in such incredible hands," he said. "From Chris Columbus, to Amblin to Netflix, there are geniuses everywhere I look. And what a cast. I'm pinching myself."

The Thursday Murder Club does not yet have a release date.
