Godzilla Minus One has set a new box office record, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film in the franchise.

The latest feature in Toho’s series sees the titular monster wreak havoc in postwar Japan, with the action following Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) as he attempts to overcome his feelings of survivor guilt from the Second World War.

In addition to critical acclaim, the film has been a hit with audiences, now passing the $80 million mark in terms of total gross; this takes it past 2016’s Shin Godzilla ($78 million) to become the highest-grossing Godzilla film from Japan.

Despite the popular and critical acclaim, producer Minami Ichikawa recently revealed that the studio are in no rush to develop a sequel, with the boss prioritising quality over quantity.

“We established a dedicated 'Godzilla Room' division at Toho in 2019,” he began. “We're collectively considering the future of the Godzilla character. We've had things like animated Godzilla films in the past, so we're brainstorming new avenues to expand the Godzilla universe, including publications, merchandise, and collaboration products.

“However, I don't feel the need to rush the next instalment of a live-action film. Good films are all about quality. We want great ideas, an excellent script, a talented director, and the right cast to work on it carefully. Godzilla deserves to have that level of intentionality.”

The producer also spoke about the influence from Hollywood depictions of the character, explaining that the studio are always looking for ways to innovate whilst maintaining the core look of the iconic character.

“To be more faithful to the Japanese Godzilla, Toho secured a contract with Legendary Pictures,” he said. “This allowed us to guide and preserve the image and concept of Japan's Godzilla. However, the robust response to this newest instalment might come from the design and narrative elements that evoke the original Godzilla's essence.”

Godzilla Minus One is in cinemas now.
