Everything we know about the 2025 Oscars
Hollywood’s biggest night gets a sequel, its 97th to be precise
The journey to the 97th Academy Awards ceremony has officially begun with movie fans across the world starting to show light signs of Oscar fever.
It may feel like 2024’s event only recently took place but with a steady flow of movies hitting cinema screens and streaming outlets each and every week, pop-culture conversation is slowly starting to turn towards a new batch of heavy hitters.
This year’s event saw late night face Jimmy Kimmel on hosting duty, with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things battling it out for Oscars supremacy. As it turned out, the latter ended up walking away with the most statuettes and with zero controversies in between card openings, it was generally considered to be a successful night.
Can the 2025 Oscars keep up the trend? Here’s what we know about it so far.
When are the 2025 Oscars happening?
The 2025 Oscars will take place on Sunday, 2 March 2024, with the action streamed across American channel ABC from 4pm Pacific Time live from Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.
Movie fans in the UK will once again be able to watch the action live although exact details of where this will air and what time coverage will begin has yet to be confirmed. 2024’s ceremony was aired on ITV and ITVX with as-it-happens coverage starting from 11pm GMT. 2025’s event will likely get the same treatment.
Who is hosting the 2025 Oscars?
No host for the 2025 Oscars ceremony has been announced just yet. That said, we do know that Kimmel will not return for another stint as Oscar MC.
The popular Late Night frontman has hosted the Oscars four times in total, first in 2017 and 2018 and again in 2023 and 2024. He was also present during the now-infamous Best Picture slip-up in 2018 where the musical La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner instead of the drama Moonlight.
After impressing audiences during presenter duty at 2023’s event, many fans wanted comedian John Mulaney to take the reigns. However, a report released in late July confirmed that he had also declined an offer to host.
As it stands, it’s unclear who might oversee the 97th Academy Awards Ceremony.
Who are the 2025 Oscars nominees?
The nominations for the 2025 Oscars will be unveiled on 17 January 2025 with voting officially closing just a few days earlier on 12 January.
Until then, we won’t know for sure who might be in the running for the night’s biggest awards. However, 2024 is already shaping up to be a year of interesting releases with many outlets suggesting films like Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan movie A Complete Unknown and Joker sequel Folie à Deux starring Lady Gaga and previous Best Actor Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix could be in the running.
However, with many movies yet to be released — and obscure, left-field favourites all but guaranteed to emerge — at this stage, it really is anyone’s guess as to who might win big.
The 97th Academy Awards Ceremony takes place on Sunday 2 March 2025.
