Thanks to a truly horrifying first trailer and subsequent fan backlash, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been pushed back three months in order for a few crucial tweaks to be made – but Jim Carrey isn't sure if the audience should be dictating the creative process.

Carrey, who stars as villain Doctor Robotnik in the film, spoke about the backlash on Friday (August 2) during the Television Critics Association press tour.

"I don’t know quite how I feel about the audience being in on the creation of it, while it’s happening," he said.

"We’ll have to see what that entails," he continued. "Sometimes you find that the collective consciousness decides it wants something and then when it gets it, it goes, 'OK, I don’t want it'."

The film adaptation of the classic computer game character was moved back by three months so the visual effects team could make changes to Sonic's appearance.

After the first trailer dropped, fans were horrified to see that Sonic had two separate eyes (rather than his traditional mono eye) and disturbingly human-like teeth.

Explaining that the edits won't require him to do any reshoots, Carrey added: "You become a Frankenstein’s monster at some point right?

"I don’t really concern myself with things once I did my thing. I’m not super concerned about it. It’s gonna happen how it happens. It’s either going to be a good thing or a bad thing."

Sonic the Hedgehog is now slated to hit cinemas on February 14, 2020.
