Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are set for a Forrest Gump reunion on Robert Zemeckis' new film Here.

The three originally worked on the 1994 classic and while Hanks and Zemeckis have worked together since, most recently on Pinocchio, Here will mark the first collaboration between them all since the Oscar-winning film.

Hanks and Wright are also set to be de-aged through the use of hyperrealistic technology that includes AI face replacements and computer generated de-ageing that will allow the decades-spanning story to be told with the same actors.

Based on Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name, Here is a story told over generations that covers themes such as love, loss, hope, struggle and legacy.

As well as Hanks and Wright, the cast will also feature Paul Bettany and Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly.

On the new technology being deployed on Here, Zemeckis said: “I’ve always been attracted to technology that helps me to tell a story. With Here, the film simply wouldn’t work without our actors seamlessly transforming into younger versions of themselves. Metaphysic’s AI tools do exactly that, in ways that were previously impossible!"

He added: "Having tested every flavour of face replacement and de-ageing technology available today, Metaphysic are clearly the global leaders in feature-quality AI content and the perfect choice for this incredibly challenging, emotional film.”

De-ageing an actor is not a new concept but has become increasingly commonplace in Hollywood in recent years.

The first use of the technology came in 2006 with X-Men: The Last Stand where Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan were made to look like younger versions of themselves.

The most high profile use of the technology was in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman which saw the entire cast including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci de-aged and also aged to play younger and older versions of their characters.

Harrison Ford is also set to be ae-aged for a flashback sequence in the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
