Neill Blomkamp Teases Mystery Movie (Definitely Not Alien 5)
Sci-fi fans everywhere have long been clamouring for director Neill Blomkamp to make his long-promised ‘Alien’ movie – but as that’s on hold at present, it seems he’s sidestepping to something different for the time being.
The South African filmmaker has just dropped a bit of a teaser for his next feature, by way of this mysterious image posted to Instagram on Wednesday:
Blomkamp’s caption simply reads, ‘Working on new things, currently not alien.’
The ‘District 9,’ ‘Elysium’ and ‘Chappie’ filmmaker first made known his plans for an ‘Alien’ movie in 2015, releasing concept art for a direct sequel to ‘Aliens’ which would ignore the events of ‘Alien3’ and ‘Alien Resurrection,’ bringing both Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley and Michael Biehn’s Hicks back to the series.
20th Century Fox had initially rejected Blomkamp’s pitch, but after overwhelming support from fans (not to mention Weaver and Biehn), the project was officially given the go-ahead.
However, the brakes came on once again when Ridley Scott opted to make ‘Alien: Covenant,’ the upcoming ‘Prometheus’ sequel/’Alien’ prequel – but it is still believed Blomkamp’s sequel will be made at some point in the coming years.
We look forward to finding out more about Blomkamp’s mystery interim movie, but given both his history and the somewhat monstrous visage in the teaser image, it seems fair to assume it’ll be something on the fantastical side.
Meanwhile, ‘Alien: Covenant’ is due in cinemas on 4 August 2017.
