Netflix is developing a Resident Evil TV series, with the news landing as PS4 Resident Evil 2 redux hits stores.

Despite the fact the source material is certifiably insane (this is a games series that mixed zombies, giants and… evil crows?) Netflix has become the latest distributor to try to make a decent story out of the Resident Evil franchise, something Screen Gems didn’t manage in six films.

That said, the movie franchise did make money, so people do want to see this stuff. The series earned $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film series ever based on a video game.

So, if the Netflix show is actually good, this could be the biggest show since The Walking Dead.

According to Deadline, Netflix is working on a scripted series, which they’ll deliver as global original.

Says Deadline, “The plan is for the series to expand the Resident Evil universe and deepen the exiting mythology. I hear the series will keep the basic premise, which also served as a setup for the movie franchise.”

“The drama series will explore the dark inner workings of the Umbrella Corporation and the new world order caused by the outbreak of the T-virus. While the project is in early stages, the series is expected to incorporate all of Resident Evil’s signature elements, including action sequences and “easter eggs.”

The much-maligned zombie franchise is getting another run-out

As long as those ‘easter eggs’ including a starring role for a ‘Licker’ (monsters with really long tongues) we’ll be watching this thing. And we even promise not to laugh at it!

The Netflix series is a while off though, production company Constantin (who also produced the movies) are still searching for a showrunner, who will presumably need to be up for tying the show in with the movie reboot, which will be directed by 47 Meters Down’s Johannes Roberts.
