Netflix shares exciting Happy Gilmore 2 update

Netflix has shared an exciting update on the long-awaited Happy Gilmore 2.

The streaming service confirmed that the comedy sequel is now in production with a social media post on Monday (September 9), showing Happy's signature Boston Bruins jersey in the on-set wardrobe.

Adam Sandler shared the same photo on his Instagram, where he quoted an iconic line from the 1996 sports comedy.

"It ain’t over. The way I see it… we’ve only just begun," he wrote alongside the photo.

Netflix announced earlier this year at its Upfront presentation that Sandler would "reprise his iconic role in a brand-new movie" coming to the streaming service.

Sandler subsequently offered an update on the project last month during an appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

"We’re going to do Happy Gilmore," he said in August. "This is happening. We’re getting ready to shoot it in New Jersey. We start in a couple weeks. It’s good."

The comedian went on: "We worked hard on the script. We didn’t want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time. We’re really excited about it. We wrote our asses off. So many of the golfers are being nice and will be a part of it."

The full cast of Happy Gilmore 2 hasn't yet been announced, but NFL player Travis Kelce is confirmed to have a cameo in the sequel.

"He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy," Sandler told Fallon. "You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell."

Christopher McDonald is also expected to come back as Gilmore's golfing rival Shooter McGavin. Sadly, two of the original film's most iconic stars – Carl Weathers and The Price is Right's US host Bob Barker – have passed away since Happy Gilmore's 1996 release.

Happy Gilmore 2 will stream on Netflix, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
