The first trailer for Bird Box Barcelona has been released, sharing more insights into the follow-up to Netflix's 2018 post-apocalyptic horror.

Premiering next month, Bird Box Barcelona exists on the same timeline as Bird Box, the first movie starring Sandra Bullock.

The concept of the spin-off film will be similar — cover your eyes if you want a shot at survival — but the action will move to the other side of the Atlantic, as the title suggests.

Like the US in the first film, Spain and the rest of Europe are plagued by the invasion of some mysterious entities that, if looked directly in the eye, will prompt people to kill themselves. Bird Box's eerie premise is borrowed from the novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, who serves as producer on Barcelona.

This time around the protagonists are father-daughter duo Sebastián and Sophia, played by Mario Casas and Naila Schuberth respectively.

They are joined by Barbarian and Black Mirror star Georgina Campbell, as well as Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner, Patrick Criado, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Lola Dueñas and Celia Freijeiro.

Written and directed by Álex Pastor and David Pastor, Barcelona teases an "even more sinister threat" looming large over this new group of survivors.

"After a mysterious force decimates the world's population, Sebastián must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona," the official synopsis shared by Netflix reads.

"As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows."

Bird Box Barcelona starts streaming on Netflix on July 14.
