New Director Linked To Giant Shark Movie Meg

Last we heard of giant shark movie ‘Meg,’ it was set to be famed horror director Eli Roth’s first shot at a megabudget blockbuster.

However, it seems Roth has ‘quietly exited’ the Warner Bros production, and now Jon Turteltaub is in line to replace him, according to Deadline.

Co-produced by China-based Gravity (and potentially set to shoot in China), ‘Meg’ is an adaptation of the 1997 novel by Steve Alten, about a megaladon - a prehistoric ancestor of the great white shark, but many times larger - which suddenly surfaces in the present day.

The novel became a New York Times best-seller, spurring Alten to write a series of sequels, and going into development as a feature film almost immediately - yet struggling to gain momentum.

Turteltaub does not seem the likeliest candidate to take over a film originally earmarked for Eli Roth, whose films are noted for their graphic gore.

By stark contrast with his predecessor, Turletaub’s filmography is largely family-friendly, his best known films including ‘3 Ninjas,’ ‘Cool Runnings,’ and the ‘National Treasure’ movies.

Turteltaub has also been linked to the movie adaptation of Disneyland attraction ‘It’s A Small World.’

His attachment to ‘Meg’ is not yet confirmed, but if Turteltaub does sign on, we can expect the results to be less suitable for kids than much of his other work.

Even so, if Roth is off the project, it might imply the studio wanted some less grisly than he had in mind.

The script for ‘Meg’ is by Dean Georgaris, whilst Belle Avery and Colin Wilson produce. It is provisionally lined up for release in 2017.
