New on Sky Cinema and NOW in June 2023: Best movies and TV from Don't Worry Darling to The Idol

Sky and NOW are celebrating Pride month in June with a host of exciting, entertaining, and educative new LGBTQ+ films and series, including Billy Eichner’s hysterical 2022 rom-com Bros and the premiere of comedy drama Somebody, Somewhere’s second season.

Elsewhere, a trifecta of films that celebrate women on both sides of the camera hit Sky Cinema in June. First up, Olivia Wilde’s super-stylish Harry Styles and Florence Pugh starring suburbian blockbuster thriller Don’t Worry Darling makes its streaming debut this month, And then there’s Gina Prince-Bythewood’s badass historical women warrior action epic The Woman King.

Last but not least on the film front is Stephen Frears’ The Lost King, which stars a resplendent Sally Hawkins and shines a light on Philippa Langley, the tenacious amateur historian responsible for one of the most remarkable discoveries in British history.

On the TV side of things, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson’s latest discourse dominator The Idol and the second season of Sex and the City spin-off And Just Like That…hit NOW in June, promising sex, scandal, and cults led by global megastars.

But, if you prefer your entertainment to be family friendly and not potentially psychologically scarring, then the fifth season of comics Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan’s challenge show Rob & Romesh Vs has you covered. That being said, there is an episode where they try and make it in the Philharmonic that might send you over the edge, so be warned.

New movies on Sky Cinema and NOW in June 2023

Bros | 1 June

One of the highlights of Sky’s Pride Month programming, Bros gives the rom-com a long overdue refresh, telling a gay love story that’s as cheeky as it is charming and as honest about what it is to be gay in the 2020s as it is happy to poke fun at genre tropes and societal stereotypes.

Billy Eichner — who also co-writes — plays Bobby, a successful, incredibly single author and podcaster whose dating cynicism is challenged when he meets hunky will executor Aaron (Luke Macfarlane). Deftly dovetailing educative moments as Bobby prepares to open an LGBTQ+ museum with silly setpieces and earnest points of emotional poignance, Bros is perfect Pride viewing.

The Lost King | 16 June

In 2012, the remains of King Richard III were found beneath a carpark in Leicester some 500 years after having been presumed lost forever. Stephen Frears’ The Lost King, which sees the filmmaker reteam with his Philomena leading man Steve Coogan, tells the eye-opening true story of Philippa Langley, the amateur historian behind the sensational discovery. Sally Hawkins is on typically fine form as Langley, who defied skepticism and pervasive misogyny amongst the academic elite to help make one of the most important historic discoveries in British history.

Don’t Worry Darling | 23 June

A little bit Truman Show, a lot Black Mirror, and stylistically very Stepford Wives, Booksmart director Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling is a lavish thriller with a lot on its mind. Florence Pugh stars as Alice, a 1950s housewife who lives in Victory, a utopian company town, with husband Jack (Harry Styles). When Alice begins to suspect things may not be quite as they seem with Victory and her husband’s charismatic boss Frank (Chris Pine) however, she determines to find out just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

The Woman King | 30 June

Set in the former West African kingdom of Dahomey in the early 19th century, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King is a historical action epic of The Last of the Mohicans and Braveheart’s ilk. It tells the remarkable true story of all-female warrior unit the Agojie and their leader, General Nanisca (Viola Davis), as they seek to protect their king (John Boyega) and kingdom. With astonishing action set pieces, vibrant cinematography, and a thought-provoking sense of self awareness, this is one last year’s finest films.

New TV on Sky and NOW in June 2023

The Idol | 5 June

Controversy is the calling card for Sam Levinson’s incendiary new series The Idol. Before a single episode had aired, a damning Rolling Stone report described in wincing detail a “disgustingly off the rails” production, and the wildly divisive response to the show’s recent Cannes premiere has done little to calm the storm raging around the project.

The series centres on Lily-Rose Depp’s aspiring pop idol Jocelyn. Having pulled out of her last tour due to a nervous breakdown, the starlet determines to reclaim her status as America’s sexiest star while embarking on an ill-advised affair with a self-help guru and contemporary cult leader played by Abel ‘The Weeknd’ Tesfaye. For better or worse, it’s the show everybody’s going to be talking about this summer.

Somebody, Somewhere S2 | 6 June

A warm hug of a series that examines the human condition with a simultaneous lightness of touch and needling emotional specificity, Somebody, Somewhere remains something of a hidden gem as it heads into its second series. The show follows struggling queer Kansan Sam (Bridget Everett, also producing), a would-be singer who is left re-evaluating her life and trying to figure out who she is and what she wants in the wake of her sister’s untimely death.

And Just Like That… S2 | Episodes 1 and 2 drop on 22 June, then weekly

Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) continue to navigate life and friendship in their fifties in the second season of Sex and the City revival And Just Like That… And, although there’s still no sign of Kim Cattrall’s Samantha making an IRL appearance, Carrie’s love life is set to get a little more complicated by the return of old flame Aidan Shaw (John Corbett). And just like that, our curiosity is piqued!

Rob & Romesh Vs S5 | TBC June

As far as challenge shows go, Rob & Romesh Vs is one that really has lived up to the format. Over the last four series, Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan have raced Usain Bolt, dabbled in drag, taken freekicks with the England World Cup Squad, and performed on the West End, in the circus, at the ballet, and on ice. Now the lads are back at it in this, their fifth season. Penn & Teller, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Crufts await…
