New Star Wars: Rogue One Images Reveal U-Wing Starship
‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ introduces a new Rebel starship.
Although we’ve heard the U-Wing mentioned before, we’ve yet to see the Rebel starship appear on screen. That is, until now. But thanks to a new video over at StarWars.com, we finally have our first look at this impressive new ship.
Introducing the INCOM UT-60D – aka the U-Wing.

But what does this new ship do?
“The U-Wing is a new ship in the Star Wars universe,” said Creative Executive, Matt Martin. “It’s a troop transport and gunship, so it’s there to bring in Rebel troops to heavy fire zones and get out as quickly as possible.”
Of course, this fits well with what we known of ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ so far.
Following the story of a group of Rebels on a dangerous mission to uncover the original Death Star plans, it’s likely that a troop deployment ship such as the U-Wing would come in rather handy.
And given the odds stacked against them, some fire support will be welcome, too.
But what’s with those wings?
“The wings move depending on the situation,” explained Martin. “It’s there to both drop off troops and provide air support.”
That’s right – mimicking the original X-Wing to some degree, the new U-Wing features wings which switch positions depending on the situation. It’s a design feature which ‘Star Wars’ fans are well aware of… but the new U-Wing seems to completely pivot its wings from its forward position to an almost complete horizontal position.
Rather cool… but quite why it does this remains to be seen.
And it turns out, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the U-Wing…
“What’s really cool about it, is that it was sort of secretly revealed last year at Star Wars: Celebration Anaheim where the very first piece of Rogue One concept art is actually showing a U-Wing dropping off troops.”
‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
