No Deadpool cameo in Logan, but Wolverine crossover possible, screenwriters say

‘Deadpool’ screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have confirmed that, contrary to recent rumours, we definitely won’t be seeing Ryan Reynolds as the merc with the mouth in the upcoming ‘Logan’ – but they don’t rule out a Deadpool/Wolverine crossover in the future.

Speaking to The Playlist, Reese firmly states the rumoured ‘Logan’ cameo is “not happening. The tones are just too different.

“I’m not sure exactly where that rumor came from, but Hugh and Ryan are really close and they really do want to work together and they really do want to see these characters come together, so in the long run, that rumor could become true — that they’re in a movie together, but it’s just not ‘Logan.’ And no, not even an end-credit scene.”

This was always an issue with speculation that Deadpool might appear in ‘Logan.’ The third and apparently final ‘Wolverine’ solo movie has long been pitched as a major departure from the ‘X-Men’ series, promising to be by far its most grounded and mature entry to date.

It was always hard to see how Deadpool could fit into that; sure, like ‘Logan’ the character’s movie is geared toward adults (though ‘mature’ isn’t necessarily the most applicable adjective), but the heavily comedic, satirical, fourth-wall breaking approach would seem very much at odds with the far more sombre ‘Logan.’

That having been said, Reese and Wernick say they’re open to the concept of a future ‘Wolverine’ team-up, although they insist it isn’t on the drawing board at present.

Wernick says, “It would be amazing to have Hugh resurrect Wolverine in the Deadpool universe, and again, Ryan’s making a hard push to make that happen, and hopefully the public gets behind it and we can all convince Hugh to put the claws on one more time.”

The screenwriters and their cohorts in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men universe certainly have their hands full at present, with the upcoming ‘Deadpool 2’ expected to be followed both by a third film and a further ‘X-Men’ spin-off ‘X-Force.’

Reese stresses that at present a Wolverine/Deadpool movie is “not in the plan, but if it were to happen, it would require a hard look at the overall architecture of our storylines.”

‘Deadpool 2’ is expected to start production in the coming months, and is scheduled to open in March 2018, whilst ‘Logan’ opens in UK cinemas on 1 March.
