Odeon cinemas announce plan for phased reopening from 4 July

The Odeon cinema chain has revealed its plans for a phased reopening from 4 July following the easing of coronavirus lockdown restrictions across England.

The UK’s largest cinema chain will reopen ten venues on 4 July – the earliest date cinemas can reopen from – with comprehensive new measures in place designed to meet Government guidelines and keep staff and customers safe. The chain plans to open a further 88 UK cinemas by 16 July.

A mix of recent and remastered classics will be screened by the chain when they open their doors for the first time since they were closed mid-March. Titles customers will be able to buy tickets for from today (25 June) include 1917, Empire Strikes Back, re-released and remastered in 4k for its 40th anniversary, Sonic the Hedgehog and Onwards, Little Women, Bad Boys for Life, Dirty Dancing and The Greatest Showman.

Measures in place to meet the government’s social distancing guidelines include contactless payments, “grab and go” pre-packages snacks and drinks, limited seating plans, staggered show times, frequent cleaning, sanitiser stations, and PPE for the staff.

Odeon’s plans follow Cineworld and Picturehouse’s recent announcement that it would reopen from 10 July, as will Vue cinemas. Showcase cinemas will also reopen from 4 July.

We’ve carefully planned every step of our guest journey and put safety measures in place that will enable our highly trained colleagues to provide a controlled and safer cinema experience for all our guests.

“New measures include social distancing in our auditoriums and foyers, additional cleaning regimes, and a request to book tickets online prior to arrival. We would like to thank our colleagues and guests for their patience during this period, and we can’t wait to welcome guests back to big screen entertainment and a safer cinema experience.”
