Outer Banks star's new movie gets poor RT ratingParamount Pictures

Outer Banks star Madison Bailey’s new film The Painter has debuted with a 0% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

The action thriller stars Charlie Weber as former CIA operative Peter, alongside a cast that includes Bailey, Jon Voight, Marie Avgeropoulos, Jason Gray-Stanford and Leah Gibson.

The Painter’s synopsis reads: "An ex-CIA operative is thrown back into a dangerous world when a mysterious woman from his past resurfaces. Now exposed and targeted by a relentless killer and rogue black ops program, he must rely on skills he thought he left behind."

The first reviews have not been particularly kind to the film, which was written by Brian Buccellato and directed by Kimani Ray Smith, leading to its 0% on the review aggregator site.

While there is praise for performances within the film, including Bailey's, critics have argued that The Painter is overly complicated with a weak script and clunky exposition.

Here is a taste of what critics are saying about The Painter:

Variety

"The Painter never seems like more than a rote shoot-‘em-up inadequately juiced by the kind of shocking revelations that are all contrived verbal explication.

"While director Smith keeps things moving along briskly enough, there’s no special stylistic flair to distract you from the narrative implausibilities, occasional groaner lines, or routinely conceived characters."

Flickering Myth

"The real missed opportunity is that The Painter has no idea what to do with its central action concept of the visual and hearing impaired using those traits to their advantage in combat; it’s empty characterisation more than anything in a film that is already absurdly convoluted and stuffed with unnecessary exposition and flashbacks."

Loud and Clear Reviews

"Charlie Weber gives a great performance as the main character balancing his past and present lifestyles. He is supported by Madison Bailey as Sophia and John Voight as Byrne, the former of whom gives a surprisingly strong performance. The chemistry and tension between the three of them is poignant, supporting an otherwise weaker script.

"Many moments in the film utilise expositional dialogue too liberally, weakening the film’s tension at times. The story, however, has unique and original elements that viewers will enjoy."

The Painter is out now in US cinemas. There is not currently a UK release date for the film.
