Outer Critics Circle Nominations: ‘American Psycho,’ ‘She Loves Me’ Take the Lead (FULL LIST)
“American Psycho,” the Broadway musical that opens Thursday, and the well-received revival of “She Loves Me” topped the list of 2016 Outer Critics Circle Awards nominations with eight nods apiece. Steve Martin and Edie Brickell musical “Bright Star” and Gloria Estefan bio “On Your Feet!” nabbed seven each.
The Outer Critics, the organization of journalists who cover New York City theater for media outlets based outside of the city, is always the first out of the gate with nominations, but they tend to offer a skewed view of the upcoming awards season. Because Off Broadway shows are eligible for OCC awards, some shows that were seen Off Broadway last season aren’t eligible this season — most notably, this year, “Hamilton,” which nabbed Off Broadway trophies last year and this year wasn’t eligible for any OCCs, even though the production stands poised to dominate the Tony Awards this year.
Also likely to play a big role at the Tonys is “Shuffle Along,” the new musical with a starry cast that includes Tony-magnet Audra McDonald. That show wasn’t eligible for the OCCs this year either, because its April 28 opening fell too late to be considered for the 2016 awards.
In play races, “Eclipsed” and “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” led with five nominations each, including lead actress nods for Lupita Nyong’o (“Eclipsed”) and Jessica Lange (“Long Day’s Journey”). Other well-known names on the nominations list include Michelle Williams (“Blackbird”), Frank Langella “The Father,” Mark Strong (“A View from the Bridge”), Ben Whishaw “(The Crucible”) and Michael Shannon (“Long Day’s Journey”).
On the Off Broadway front, the previewing musical “Dear Evan Hanson” scored six nominations, which bodes well for the buzzy musical that has producers already eyeing a Broadway transfer.
OCC winners will be announced May 9, with a dinner and awards presentation set for May 26 at Sardi’s.
