Poll: Are you ready to return to the cinema in July?
When No Time To Die, the new James Bond film, announced a seven month delay at the start of March just weeks before it was due to hit cinemas, it seemed a bold move. But now, several months into a global lockdown, it seems an incredibly prescient one.
At that stage of the coronavirus pandemic, it wasn’t clear just how profoundly the world would be affected by the outbreak. Cinemas have been closed around the world since mid-March (UK cinemas closed from Wednesday, 18 March), the global box office has dropped to basically zero, and nearly every major summer movie release including Marvel’s Black Widow, Fast and Furious 9, and many more has been pushed back, some to 2021.
However, there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Cineworld has joined Vue and Showcase cinemas in confirming plans to reopen its doors in July, with social distancing measures in place, as Britain slowly begins to move out of lockdown.
A statement from Cineworld confirms that Christopher Nolan’s TENET will be the film to reopen its doors (scheduled for release on 17 July), closely followed by Disney’s live action Mulan (24 July). Wonder Woman 1984 is scheduled for August.
