In a video which went viral prior to the US presidential election, Robert De Niro professed a desire to punch Donald Trump in the face.

Not only that, he called him ‘a dog’, ‘a punk’, ‘an idiot’ and ‘a national disaster’.

Let’s just say he is not a fan.

But now that Trump has become the shock president-elect, he’s been asked about his remarks, and perhaps in the face of abject desperation, he’s hoping – perhaps praying – that things won’t be as bad as he thought.

“He’s elected president now, and I think half the country is horrified,” he said, while on the press rounds for his latest movie ‘The Comedian’.

“Many parts of the world are. We’re gonna see how he does. That’s it. It’s a fait accompli. As far as him being president, we wait and see.

“I give the benefit of the doubt that he’s going to try his best to do the right thing. Because if he doesn’t do the right thing, it will affect him and his family too. So we’re all in this together. That’s the most I can say.”

In another interview, he added: “I feel like I did when the World Trade Center was attacked.

“I’m stunned. If this is about world order, trying to work our way through a lot of problems internationally and domestically, you need a grown up for that. We’re watching.”

Asked whether he still wants to punch him in the face, he replied: “No… he’d said that at one of his rallies, and I was so offended by that, that he could actually say that, so that’s why I said that. And nobody had said it to him.”
