Josh Hartnett, star of Penny Dreadful, has signed on to join the cast of the 2023 film Oppenheimer, alongside Marvel stars Robert Downey Jr and Florence Pugh.

Oppenheimer is due to be released in July next year in a slot often reserved for director Christopher Nolan, who previously directed high-performing action films like Inception, Dunkirk, Batman Begins and Tenet.

According to Deadline, Hartnett is the latest star to join the growing cast, which already includes A-Listers like Mary Poppins Returns' Emily Blunt, Jason Bourne actor Matt Damon, Bohemian Rhapsody's Rami Malek, and Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy.

Murphy has been tapped to star in the title role as J Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who led the Manhattan Project, which was the precursor to the creation of the atomic bomb during World War Two. Blunt will star as Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer, his wife, and Damon will take on the role of Lt. Gen (per The Hollywood Reporter).

As for Downey Jr, he's on board as Lewis Strauss, the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

The release date is around two weeks before the anniversary of the dropping of the bomb in Hiroshima, one of the first sites of testing for the atomic bomb.

The film will be based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin.

Hartnett's role has not yet been confirmed, so you'll have to watch this space for more on who he'll be playing. Nolan has clearly liked Hartnett's work for a while though, even considering him to play Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins before ultimately going with Christian Bale for the job.

In addition to playing Ethan Chandler in Penny Dreadful, Hartnett has also previously starred in The Virgin Suicides, Peal Harbor, O, Black Hawk Down, Lucky Number Slevin, and most recently in a main role for the TV adaptation of Robert Harris' book The Fear Index.

Further details about the film and the roles assigned to the A-list cast will be coming out soon, but, as of yet, there isn't much more known about the new outing from Nolan.
