We may be in store for some shades of grey in the new Batman movie, according to Robert Pattinson.

Pattinson will play Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' forthcoming take on the Gotham City vigilante.

And while we've little to go on plot-wise, Pattinson has given an indication of where things are headed in an interview with the New York Times.

“Batman’s not a hero,” the Twilight star says. “He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one.”

He goes on to say: “I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it’s a dope character. His morality is a little bit off. He’s not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character.

“There is a simplicity to his worldview, but where it sits is strange, which allows you to have more scope with the character.”

Pattinson's comments come amid some key new cast announcements.

After Jonah Hill reportedly exited talks to play Edward Nashton, aka The Riddler in the movie, the part will now be played by There Will Be Blood star Paul Dano.

The Riddler was last played in the Batman movies by Jim Carrey in Joel Schumacher's lurid Batman Forever.

Joining Dano and Patterson will be Zoe Kravitz, who has landed the role of Catwoman, while Jeffrey Wright will play Commissioner James Gordon.

The movie is due for release on June 25, 2021.
