Warner Bros’ LEGO movie franchise, about to reach its second feature with the upcoming ‘LEGO Batman Movie,’ continues to break new ground bringing DC comics characters to the big screen.

Amongst its many notable strengths, 2014’s ‘The LEGO Movie’ featured the first film appearance ever by Wonder Woman. Yes, really, voice actress Cobie Smulders beat ‘Batman V Superman’s Gal Gadot to the punch by over two years.

And now, ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ will introduce another much-loved super-heroine we’ve yet to see in live action: Batgirl, who gets an introduction in the new TV spot below.

Okay, this isn’t technically Batgirl’s big screen debut, as she was also in 2016 animated movie ‘Batman: The Killing Joke,’ but that only got a very limited theatrical release so perhaps we don’t have to count it. Oh well, what difference does it really make? Either way, ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ boasts a full Bat-tastic ensemble we can’t expect to see in live action for a while, if ever again.

Alongside Will Arnett, who reprises his ‘The LEGO Movie’ role as the very, very Dark Knight, we have Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon – the new Police Commissioner of Gotham City in this version of events, who dons a costume to fight alongside Batman (or, as she suggests calling him in the clip above, Batboy).

Filling out that core masked trio is Michael Cera as the voice of Dick Grayson/Robin, whilst Zach Galifianakis voices The Joker, and Ralph Fiennes voices Alfred.

And do we all remember the last time Batman, Robin and Batgirl shared the screen? That’s right – 1997’s ‘Batman and Robin.’ Even 20 years on, a whole lot of fans are still sore about that one. But if ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ manages to be even half as smart, funny and exciting as ‘The LEGO Movie’ was, surely even the most jaded Batfan will be able to dismiss all memories of Joel Schumacher’s day-glo disaster.

‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ opens in UK cinemas on 10 February.
